The name Morgan was originally a boys name.  It first originates from the Welsh name Morgant  meaning sea, bright, light, or bright sea.  The female origin perhaps came from King Arthur's jealous sister: Morgan le Faye (which is really funny because my grandmother's name is Faye).  Morgaine and Morgayne are midieval Irish originates.  I've also heard it means "born by the River" (i was born by a glass of water, does that count? )
